My Filofax

Ode to my (Original Personal Fluoro Pink Leather) Filofax

8

When I was 11 years old my mum bought me a Filofax for my birthday. I distinctly remember turning it over in my hands: dark green leather, inset with pink and purple tapestry. It was love at first sight. For years my Filofax became my faithful companion, tucked reassuringly under my arm wherever I went, ready to be whipped out and scribbled in whenever I felt the urge.

A few months ago, while visiting my mum, I uncovered this long-forgotten treasure lurking in a dusty drawer. The edges battered and bruised from years of use, the pages dog-eared and covered in doodles, outlining who was my ‘best friend’, ‘second best friend’ and so on, and when my pals and I were due to ‘go out and play’.

Having reached my 30s, and recently got engaged, the urge to get organised is an itch that needs to be scratched. Juggling household chores, wedding planning, blogging, freelance, work, social life and exercise is no small task, and a standard diary just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore. So, with my birthday money burning a hole in my pocket, I hopped online. Oh my how the Filofax world has changed…

The day my brand new, shiny (and bright!) Filofax plopped onto my desk a few raised eyebrows sprung up around the office. As a print editor working alongside a large online team, it’s beyond them why a quick ‘tap, tap, swipe’ isn’t sufficient for my diary planning.

And here’s why…

A Filofax isn’t a block of metal and glass, filled with angular, generic type that’s been tapped onto a screen. Messy or tidy, covered in stickers or overtly minimal, a Filofax is a true reflection of its owner. A Filofax is a living thing, constantly evolving, changing, and living. Its contents ebb and flow according to your daily routine. It’s physically solid, reassuringly tangible.

I like how you can sense whether a person is happy or sad by the colour pen they used, or whether their handwriting is scrawled or laboured. I like that you have to be committed with a Filofax. Ink isn’t easily erased, so a Filofax forces you to be deliberate and considered. And I love that as the months and years go by, your Filofax becomes a scrapbook of your life, bursting with memories, trials, worries and lots and lots of little joys.

What does your Filofax say about you?
